Tails & Tales in Teen Space!

Wed, 07/28/2021 - 3:45pm -- CKing

Hello Teens! Here is your update on changes in Teen Space! My name is Colleen King and I’m the new Teen Librarian at Westerly Library & Wilcox Park! I will be keeping you up-to-date on our newest arrivals and all news pertaining to Teen Space. We are currently celebrating summer with Tails & Tales! Our Summer Reading Program is underway but it’s never too late to join! We are using the Beanstack Tracker app to log time spent reading this summer. Every 60 minutes of reading will earn you a badge. Each badge enters you in a drawing for a Westerly Chamber of Commerce gift card at the end of the summer! There are even badges for non-literary activities, too! Drink an extra glass of water and earn a badge! Or take a walk in Wilcox Park for another badge! Personally, my favorite part of this year’s summer reading program is that everyone may choose a free book to keep when they register! Have you been hoping to add a beautiful hardcover copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to your home library? Or maybe you’ve heard the buzz about the award-winning historical fiction novel, One Crazy Summer? These are only two of the choices in our free book locker! Register here for summer reading and see if the title you’ve been looking for is available as a free book!

I am currently reading Fire Keeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley. This fast-paced mystery focuses on Daunis Fontaine, a recent high school graduate navigating the divide between her hometown and the Ojibwe reservation where she attends powwows and visits family as an Anishinaabe teen. Daunis doesn’t feel fully accepted in either place. However, the love she shows for her community will draw her into a dangerous mission to find out who is distributing meth to teens in her area. When tragedy strikes too close to home, Daunis finds herself left with a new normal; one that includes beginning college and meeting the newest recruit on her brother’s hockey team: a secretive player named Jamie. What will Daunis uncover about Jamie, her family, and her community? All of this pales in comparison to what she will discover about herself when the responsibility of finding the source of the drugs falls on her shoulders. If you are looking for a high-intensity thriller, Fire Keeper’s Daughter will keep you entranced. Daunis is a protagonist to be remembered, both for her strengths as a premed student with knowledge of traditional medicine as well as for her vulnerability as a young woman grieving for her community. I like to give a warning when a book discusses themes that can be disturbing. Be advised that this novel includes domestic violence, sexual assault, and references to drug use.
