Teen Space Garden in the Park

Fri, 06/15/2018 - 1:12pm -- MDeSantis

Come to Wilcox Park and check out the new teen space community garden!  Located on the hill behind the pond,  the garden is a teen foray into going green.

We want you to come and plant and garden with us!  Teens (ages 12 to 18) are welcome to come garden with the library all summer long.  You can earn volunteer hours by getting dirty and learning about the Earth.   During the summer, we will be out most nice days to water, weed, and tend to our communal plants.

Getting in touch with the Earth and engaging with the environment can have wonderful effects on your psyche. Take advantage of this opportunity in the park and come garden in a relaxed environment where you can decompress from the school year!

If we are successful in growing, we will use the harvests in our end of summer cooking programs.  We hope to learn to make sauce, learn about pickling and canning, and to strengthen our knowledge of food sovereignty and nutrition.  Stay tuned for other programs on native plants in Rhode Island.

The garden was built as part of expanding teen programming to allow more access to nature, as well as promote nutritional literacy and environmental awareness.  Teen volunteers and patrons started by building recycled planters inside the teen space in April in honor of Earth day.  Thanks to seeds from URI's Master Gardener's program and other donations from local businesses including McQuade's Ace Hardware in Westerly, Earth Care Farms in Charlestown, Home Depot of Westerly, and of course the time and effort of our Park managers, we broke ground in May and started planting a few weeks ago.  So far, we have corn, tomatoes, sunflowers, peas, cauliflower, marigolds, dill, lettuce, and carrots either growing or soon to be.

If you are interested in getting involved, call the teen space at 401-596-2877 ext 301 or email . We look forward to seeing you and the sun outside this summer.
