Join us Saturday, June 22 at 1 PM on the Esplanade for the Inaugural Match on the Class of 1969 Westerly High School Chess Table.
The match will be played by Ryan Sowa from North Kingston, and Hayes Goodman from Westerly.
Hayes is the state’s current middle school champion and is the state’s representative in the upcoming Barber Tournament of Champions. The Barber is the national event that takes state champions in grades K-8 from each state.
Ryan is the state's high school champion playing in the Denker Tournament of High School Champions for the 4th year in a row. He is recognized as the best high school chess player in RI. Not only did Ryan win this year's RI HS champion title, he also won the RI adult state championship.
Both players are part of SENECA which stands for the Southeast New England Chess Association, a nonprofit organization that operates exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. The association was formed in January 2015 as the request came in for more tournaments in the Bristol County area of Massachusetts. They currently run tournaments and programs in various locations in RI as well as local MA, going as far as Easton and Sharon, MA.
