Purpose and 2021-2022 Goals

The Friends of Westerly Library and Wilcox Park is a non-public tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1972. The Friends’ By-Laws simply state its Purpose “to promote and further the goals of the Memorial and Library Association as defined in its constitution.” Two main purposes of the Friends are to be champions at raising funds and volunteering for the Library/Park and to help develop a public understanding of today’s library and its vital role.

With this broad mandate, the Friends have articulated Goals for 2021-2022 that will continue its focus on fundraising, advocacy and volunteer services that benefit the Library and Park within the constraints of the COVID reality.  Anticipating that our primary fundraising activity of in-person book fairs will be curtailed, and to acquire important materials and equipment beyond the operating budget of the Library and Park, the Friends are pursuing other alternatives:

•Increasing membership income by converting existing memberships to higher levels and adding new membership categories

•Continuing to sponsor special events, exhibits and speakers

•Creating new innovative, fee-paying programming

•Kick-starting a 2022 commemoration of the Friends’ “50th Anniversary”

Thank you all who helped make our October Book Fair a huge success. We raised over $10,800.00 which will be used to fund much needed services for the Westerly Library & Wilcox Park.**

“Friends at Fifty”:

Plans for the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Friends are already underway.

Among the planned events are a reading challenge which will commence in January 2022, A tea party in 2022, an historical exhibit of the history of the Friends which will be on display in the Hoxie Gallery for the month of August, 2022, a grand gala to be held at the United Theatre on September 30, 2022 with music, live and silent auctions, food and cocktails.  A time capsule is also in the works.

*As part of our fund-raising efforts for our 50th Anniversary we are offering for sale, A retrospective selection of holiday cards showcasing the whimsical humor of local cartoonist Chon Day, who also created our logo “book boy”. A box of five assorted cards and envelopes will be on sale for $10.00 a box. These cards will be available for sale on Wednesday, December 8th during the holiday stroll at the Library table at the United Theatre from 5-9.

**From the proceeds of the October book fair the Friends have sponsored for the library and park the following items:

  • 6 month renewal of GIS Cloud Mapping
  • LED Holiday Lights for Blue Atlas Cedar, Hinoki Cypress, front ramp/railings, and window candles.
  • Noise Cancelling Headphones
  • Digitization of smaller collections on microfilm
  • Children’s Room Furniture

The Friends’ are committed to re-energizing ourselves and with more than 200 members strong, we are ready to serve with the “conviction” as stated in our By-Laws, “that good library and park services are vital to the community.”
