Westerly Sun Column | Friends' Book Sale Returns!
October 07, 2024
October is one of my favorite months of the year. The dahlias are in their glory, the humidity has dropped and the temperature no longer feels oppressive, and there is SO much to do. Between apple picking, farmers markets, and Halloween-themed events going on every weekend, it’s impossible to feel bored! At the risk of overwhelming you, I’m going to add one more exciting occasion to the list...our extremely popular Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale begins this week!
Every year, the Friends of Westerly Library and Wilcox Park group work extremely hard to make this event a success, spending countless hours sorting through donations, picking the best of the best for the sale, organizing the materials and (eventually) hauling them all up the third floor to be set up. Proceeds from the book sale go directly to the library, so we are endlessly thankful for the hard work and dedication of the group! If you’re interested in joining the Friends of the Library, you can do so by visiting their website at www.friendsofwesterlylibrary.org, and filling out a brief application. There are different levels of membership, starting at just $15 per year for an individual.
The book sale, which is held in the 3rd floor Terrace Room, will officially open to the public on Thursday, October 10th at 9:00am, and will run through Saturday, October 19th (with the exception of Sunday, and Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day). Hours vary depending on the library’s hours, so please check the library or Friends’ website for the complete schedule. And, don’t forget: the final day of the sale is “Bag Day”, so you can fill a bag (of any size) with goodies for just $10!
Obviously, the book sale is an absolute haven for bookworms, but there is truly something for everyone. It’s a great opportunity to get an early start on holiday shopping, as you can load up on kids’ books, bestselling novels, and even autographed copies and first editions. I personally love to look through the cookbooks, and always end up with more than I can comfortably carry. It’s not just books, either…you’ll find DVDs, audiobooks, puzzles, and even more at the sale. So, mark it on your calendars, in-between all of you other fun fall activities…you surely won’t regret it!
